Bugology

Experience the Animal Kingdom through our exciting and interactive “Bugology” workshop.

We begin with a lively discussion of the ecological importance of animals in our environment, specifically Insects, including their roles, responsibilities, habitats, behavior, physiology, and their importance to our existence.

Various concepts are introduced such as lifecycles, adaptations, the food chain, decomposition, species diversity, conservation and so much more.

Children are then invited to intimately interact with the animals using a variety of scientific tools and their senses while sharing their new found experiences.

Some of our special guests include,

  • Insects (Beetle, stick Insects, Grasshoppers, etc.)
  • Reptiles (Snakes and Lizards)
  • Arachnids (Scorpions and Tarantulas)
  • Amphibians (Frogs/Toads, Salamanders etc.)
  • Crustaceans (Hermit Crabs, Moon Crabs etc.)and other
  • Invertebrates (Millipedes, Centipedes etc.).

This “Bugology” workshop is a great way to address both respect for all animals big or small and the growing ecological/environmental issues.

Monarchology Workshop - NEW!

bwb_widgets_cambridgeMonarchKit1.jpg

There is an epic and magical journey that happens twice a year within the Insect world, the great migration of the Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus).  This North American butterfly migrates each fall and spring as it travels to and from Mexico.

These beautiful, distinct orange and black winged butterflies instinctively travel to exactly the same mountains that their ancestors vacated the previous spring.  They rely on intuition alone to find a place in Mexico that they have never seen or visited before, as if a map were imbedded in their DNA, and they were born with this specific  knowledge.

Introducing “Monarchology”, our new Monarch Butterfly program.

Bugs Without Borders has partnered with the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory’s Monarch Rearing Kit program, and is offering a new and exciting program to teachers, educators and hobbyists.

This exciting program will outline everything about Monarchs, including their characteristics, lifecycle, diet, habitat, predators, conservation and of course their amazing migration to and from their overwintering grounds in Mexico.   This workshop will include a lively video/slide presentation, an interactive talk, and various specimens, artifacts and scientific tools.

Monarch Butterfly Rearing Kit

You will also receive you very own Monarch Butterfly Rearing Kits including:

Wormology

Worms play a vital role in our ecosystem they break down organic matter creating valuable nutrients necessary for rich fertile soil, supporting healthy plant growth.

‘Wormology’ explores the various species of ‘worms’ along with their Ecology, morphology and important contribution to our world.

Our hands on demonstrations and discussions show where these different species of worms are found, how they live, and how some, like earthworms are able to breathe and eat surrounded by dirt. Children will have the opportunity to interact with these squirmy, squishy, wiggly creatures, learn why some are known as the ‘underground farmers of the earth’ and others as ‘blood suckers’. Children will begin to understand the important role worms play not only in our environment but also in our daily lives through medicine, diet and plain fun.

This ‘Wormology’ workshop is a great way to both explain and address the environmental issue of composting, as well as, the subject of living things.

From 8 to Great

“From 8 to Great” explores the idea of change and the feelings of fear associated with moving on from grade 8 and embarking on an exciting journey into High school (and beyond).

Through interactive discussions, hands-on activities, and live animals, students will learn that everyone has a fear that affects them at least some of the time, and as they go through any kind of change or transition in their daily lives, they are likely to feel varying degrees of fear and anxiety.

Students will discover that although change is inevitable, there are ways to control and transform these fears into creative and positive actions.

This memorable workshop incorporates:

  • Interactive activities pertaining to high school fears while joining forces with other team mates
  • Hands-on activities culminating an emotionally charged element of surprise…no peeking inside the boxes
  • Drawing similarities between facing the fear of challenges of High school, and facing the fear of weird and wonderful animals. A few exotic live animals will be of assistance.
